Online Proctoring of a Blackboard Exam with Proctorio

Proctorio is an online proctoring system. As you will see below, you will set up your  previously created exam to use the Proctorio system.

You can choose different options, but will likely have the Proctorio system record a video and audio of students taking the exam.

You can then go back and view the recordings to check for cheating behavior.

First, let’s see this from the Instructors’ perspective:

Both instructors and students must use Google Chrome as their browser.

    1. If you do not have Google Chrome, you can download it here:  https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/

Once you have Google Chrome, you can use it to set up a Proctorio Exam in Blackboard.

Information for your Students:

Students DO need to set up a test for Proctorio.

Students do NOT need to schedule in advance (so there is no late fee).

The computer’s artificial intelligence watches and records students while they take the test (rather than a person).

Proctorio requires a stable internet connection, a microphone, and a camera.

[To the students:]

1.       You must use Google Chrome as your browser.

a.     If you do not have it, download it here:  https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/

2.     Proctorio REQUIRES that you download an extension for your GOOGLE CHROME browser.

3.       Proctorio needs you to allow incognito in the Proctorio extension.  See the video to see the system check and how to allow incognito:

 http://et.kent.edu/lmarks/Proctorio/System%20check%20and%20test.mp4

4.      Proctorio DOES NOT USE HUMAN PROCTORS to watch the student.  It uses computer Artificial Intelligence.  But, students DO need to identify themselves to the system.  They will need a GOOD QUALITY photo ID.  KSU IDs work well.

·       When you actually take your test, you will need to hold a PICTURE ID up to the computer CAMERA (inside the green lines) until it is happy.  It does take a few tries to get it right.

·       Once that is done, you need to have the camera take a picture of you (the program will let you know when to do this).  Be sure to sit in good lighting (DO NOT HAVE  A BRIGHT LIGHT BEHIND YOU, as your face will be in SHADOW).

·       THEN, the picture ID and your photo will be sent to Proctorio so they can VERIFY you.  THIS VIDEO DOES NOT SHOW THAT PART OF THE PROCESS.

·       See the video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uo3fyMASYVU for an example from another institution (NOT identical to KSU).

·       Once you are verified, you can take the test.
