The documentation shown below demonstrates my active participation within the professional physical education community.  I am a member of OAHPERD, and I attended the conference in Columbus, Ohio.  I attended and participated in multiple sessions, and each session heightened my knowledge in different content areas.

The session I attended called “Individual Fitness:  A High School Physical Education Alternative to Team Sport” helped me to think of creative ways in which to incorporate fitness into an elementary curriculum that will promote healthy and active lifestyles for young students and encourage them to be lifelong movers.

I participated in a hip-hop session that provided me with new dance steps to teach students that can easily be adjusted to be developmentally appropriate for all students.  This content will be beneficial to an elementary curriculum as it promotes diversity and is fit for both genders.  It also allows for exploration, creativity, and self-expression.

Another session I participated in was “Teaching Juggling the Fun Way”.  One important concept I learned from the instructor was that he never mentioned to the students that they would be juggling because it caused intimidation and fear.  The session taught different teaching cues that can be used and task progressions that aid in the development of hand/eye coordination needed for 3 object juggling.  This content would be beneficial to elementary curriculum as it works on basic hand/eye coordination while it integrates the arts, creativity, and exploration.

Another session that would be beneficial to elementary curriculum would be “Playing with Your Food:  Enhancing Standards-Based PE with Nutrition”.  This session gave new ideas of how to structure a throwing and catching lesson while also integrating health and nutrition.  The instructor provided me with new ideas for task progressions such as starting the students out in T-shape so that they are already stepping with opposition.  I thought the “swing through and tickle your knee” teaching cue to get students to use the proper form when following-through was creative and would stick well in the students’ minds.
