How to Calculate Your Grade In This Course
Here is the formula:
(Total Best Quiz Score ) x (.30) + (Midterm 1)x (.20) + (Midterm 2) x (.20) + (Final Exam score) x (.30) = your final grade
Example:
Suppose your best quiz scores (ten of them, remember you drop the lowest score of the 11 quizzes) are (9, 8, 7, 10, 8, 6, 8, 7, 8, 9) summing up as 80 out of a possible 100 points, which is 80%. Now multiply 80 by 0.3 to get 24.
Suppose you earn an 86% and an 87% on your two midterms? Multiply each by 0.2 to get 17.2 and 17.4
Suppose you earn an 88% on the final exam. Multiply 88 by .30, to get . 26.4
Sum these 4 numbers 24 + 17.2 + 17.4 + 26.4 = 85 which is a B
HOW TO ADD THE EXTRA CREDIT POINTS IF YOU TAKE THE 2 EXTRA CREDIT QUIZZES
There are 2 extra credit quizzes, each worth 3%. Suppose you earned a 90% on one (9 out of 10) and an 80% on the other.
Multiply your quiz scores by .03 as follows: 90*(.03) = 2.7 and 80*(.03) = 2.4
Add these two numbers to your total score (we calculated this in the example above as 85), so 85 + 2.7 + 2.4 = 5.1, so 85 + 5.1 = 90.1 = A-
So, the extra credit quizzes have the potential to raise your score by half a grade or more, depending on how close you are to a grade boundary.
Frequently Asked Question: Are +/- grades used in this course?
Answer: Yes, the cut-offs are as follows:
93 and up = A
90 to 92 = A-
87 to 89 = B+
83 to 86 = B
80 to 82 = B-
77 to 79 = C+
73 to 76 = C
70 to 72 = C-
67 to 69 = D+
60 to 66 = D
59 and below = F
Frequently Asked Question: Is there an opportunity to earn extra-credit points?
Answer: There are two extra credit quizzes, each worth an additional 3%. See "how to calculate your grade" above to see how this works.
