This is definitely a work in progress, but these are some links related to sediment transport that may be of interest. As always, sites reorganize, and I may not get back to the site right away. Please, help me out and let me know if a link has died.

The Federal Integrated Sedimentation Project (FISP) is a group of federal agencies concerned with collecting sediment data from the nation’s rivers. They’re the ones who think up new samplers, and have the definitive guides on how to use them.

NASA’s Visible Earth site on sediment transport has some gorgeous images of large-scale sediment transport.

USGS’s Science Topics page has all sorts of links to USGS sites dealing with sediment transport.

While I’m here, it’s often difficult to find a good book on sediment transport. If you’re looking, here are some of my favorites:

Allen, PA, 1997, Earth Surface Processes, Blackwell (ISBN: 0632035072). One of my favorites, with a very readable chapter on sediments and sediment transport.

Bridge, JS, 2003, Rivers and Floodplains, Blackwell (ISBN: 0632064897). Another nice book from Blackwell. Takes more of a fluvial geomorphology angle than Allen, but a good companion to it.

Knighton, D, 1998, Fluvial Forms and Processes, Arnold (ISBN: 0340663138). My wife’s favorite sediment transport book. I’d get in trouble if I didn’t mention it here....

Middleton, GV, and Southard, JB, 1984, Mechanics of Sediment Movement, SEPM (ISBN: ???). My copy has a bright orange paper cover and is nearly falling apart. No, you can’t have it. Still one of the finest references on sediment transport for geoscientists.

Rouse, H, 1950, Engineering Hydraulics, Wiley (ISBN: Ha!). If not the granddaddy, then at least a granddaddy of them all. Even after half a century, this is probably one of the best books ever written on the mechanics of water motion (and sediments, too). Copies are scarce, but with enough looking, you can probably get one used. This has the added value of connecting you to the generation previous--my copy belonged to John K Vennard.

Vanoni, VA, Brooks, NH, and Kennedy, JF, 1960, Lecture Notes on Sediment Transport and Channel Stability, Cal Tech (ISBN: ???). This is one of those “friend of a friend” texts that everyone needs and nobody knows about. A really good introduction to hydraulics if you aren’t familiar.
