COMPASS

1944

Radium mixed with zinc sulfide was used on a large variety of glow in the dark items including compasses.  The radium in radioluminescent paint has significant beta and gamma emissions that needlessly expose the user without contributing to illumination.  The U.S. Army therefore stopped using radium in 1968 and now uses less radiotoxic materials such as Tritium (Hydrogen-3).
