Some gas lantern mantles used by campers and others where electricity is not available contain thorium oxide.  The thorium caused the mantles to produce a higher level of illumination.  Since the early to mid 1990s Coleman (and perhaps others) have switched to yttrium-based mantles that are not radioactive.
