RESEARCH INTERESTS
I have broad interests in clinical and social psychology, particularly
in the influence of family on the course of mental illness. Specifically,
I am interested in the personal impact of parents' attitudes and behaviors
(i.e. expressed emotion) on their schizophrenic offspring.
A second area of interest is the Core Conflictual Relationship Theme
(CCRT) Rating Method. This rating scheme, developed by Dr. Lester Luborsky,
is a useful and interesting tool to examine personal "transference"
reactions that occur throughout every day life. I hope to use the CCRT
rating method or an adaptation of this method in future research projects.
CURRENT RESEARCH
Currently, I am conducting research to determine how patients with
schizophrenia perceive and experience having a parent who is high in expressed
emotion (i.e. highly critical or emotionally overinvolved parents). It
has been reliably demonstrated that patients relapse at higher rates if
they are living with parents high in expressed emotion. My research questions
include: how do these patients perceive this expressed emotion? How does
it impact their descriptions of their parents, and is it reflected in the
positiveand negative memories they recount?
