    There are two patterns for the ladies chain; refer to the text below.
    First couple begins the dance with backs to the music.
    The final figure is danced either as a full set or by all dancers on the floor.
    Swing in waltz hold.
    House holding crossed hands (rights on top).
    Gents dance forward on the left foot and ladies begin forward on the right foot.
    Bar counts (quantities of measures) for patterns are shown in bold.
    The total bar count for each Figure includes an eight-bar introduction of music.

  SET FORMATION   FIGURE 1 -- POLKAS (48 BARS)
Dance an ordinary polka step (down-2-3).
Both couples: pass through with first couple in the center; turn clockwise on-the-spot4;
repeat the preceding pass through to home4;
lead around in sweetheart hold (across the shoulder with rights, lefts in front)8;
swing in waltz hold8;
ladies chain:
          with a waist-level hold for all contacts, ladies first grasp right hands in
          the center then dance on to the opposite gent (who has danced into his
          partner's place); couples take left hands and the lady dances anticlockwise
          around the gent as he continues to face into the set (no arch); ladies
          also take right hands in the center as they dance to home8;
swing in waltz hold8.
  SET FORMATION   FIGURE 2 -- POLKAS (72 BARS)
Dance an ordinary polka step (down-2-3).
Both couples: REPEAT "MARKER" take crossed hands (rights on top) and advance and retire twice8;
still holding crossed hands, house to opposite4;
repeat the preceding advance and retire and house to home12;
swing in waltz hold8;
repeat from   REPEAT "MARKER"   32.
  SET FORMATION   FIGURE 3 -- POLKAS (72 BARS)
Dance an ordinary polka step (down-2-3).
Both couples: REPEAT "MARKER"  first   lady and second gent pass left-shoulder-to-left in the center then
          turn anticlockwise to face each other4;
hook left arms and dance around one another anticlockwise; end beside original
          partners with left arms still hooked4;
take original partner’s right hand to form a line-of-four (all holding inside hands)
          with two facing one direction and two facing the opposite direction;
          all advance in the direction being faced by the first lady2;
          retire the opposite direction2;
the line turns anticlockwise, couples separate and dance to their opposite position2;
first lady and second gent advance and retire twice (no touch)8;
Both couples: take crossed hands (rights on top) and advance and retire once4
take sweetheart hold and lead around to home4;
repeat from   REPEAT "MARKER"   with second lady and first gent leading32.
  SET FORMATION   FIGURE 4 -- JIGS (104 BARS)
Dance an ordinary jig step (down-2-3).
Both couples: ladies chain (as in Figure One):
          with a waist-level hold for all contacts, ladies first grasp right hands in
          the center then dance on to the opposite gent (who has danced into his
          partner's place); couples take left hands and the lady dances anticlockwise
          around the gent as he continues to face into the set (no arch); ladies
          also take right hands in the center as they dance to home8;
swing in waltz hold8;
REPEAT "MARKER"  first couple advance and retire once holding crossed hands4;
dance at home (one revolution), still holding crossed hands4;
second couple advance holding right hands with the gent's right arm across the
          lady's shoulder; the second gent takes left-hand-in-left with the first lady;
          the first gent dances in-place; the trio retires as the first lady turns clockwise
          under the gent's arm (both ladies thus in an across-the-shoulders hold)4;
trio advance and the first gent takes the ladies' free hands at waist-level2;
all four change direction (trio retire, first gent advance)2:
form a circle-of-four in the center and little Christmas6; reverse to-place2;
ladies chain as above8;
swing in waltz hold8;
repeat from   REPEAT "MARKER"   with second couple leading40.

Dance an ordinary polka step (down-2-3).
Both couples: REPEAT "MARKER" take crossed hands (rights on top) and advance and retire twice8;
still holding crossed hands, house to opposite4;
repeat the preceding advance and retire and house to home12;
Both couples: ladies chain (not the same as in Figures One and Four) :
          with a waist-level hold for all contacts, ladies first grasp right hands in
          the center then dance on to the opposite gent (who has danced into his
          partner's place); couples take left hands, form an arch and the lady
          dances anticlockwise around the gent and the gent follows the lady;
          ladies do not take right hands in the center as they dance to home;
          original partners take right-hand-in-right, form an arch and the lady
          dances clockwise under the arch to-place8;
swing in waltz hold8;
repeat from   REPEAT "MARKER"   40.
  SET FORMATION   FIGURE 6 -- POLKAS (152 BARS minimum (a))
Dance an ordinary polka step (down-2-3).
All couples: REPEAT "MARKER" take hands in a circle and advance and retire twice8;
swing in waltz hold8;
ladies advance and retire twice (no-touch)8;
gents advance and retire twice (no-touch); as the gents dance in the second time,
          the ladies dance outside the set to the next position on the right8;
repeat from   REPEAT "MARKER"   three times96;
take hands in a circle and advance and retire twice8;
swing in waltz hold8.
 
  (a) All couples on the dance floor dance the final figure in one circle.
Additional music (more bars) must be played if original couples are to be
re-established.  When danced as a full set (four couples), the bar-minimum
shown would be required.
