This non-progressive, sixteen-bar, two hand dance is to begin with partners side-by-side | |
(gent on the left) in a ring around the perimeter of the dance area; the line of dance | |
is anticlockwise; the dance is also danced-free in the available space as others | |
dance the same or another jig pattern. | |
Change places: remember the right-rear principle when partners change places; | |
namely, the dancer moving to the right, dances to the rear of his / her partner. | |
This two hand dance is also known as THREE STEP. Sometimes reels are played. | |
Gents begin forward on the left foot and ladies begin forward on the right foot except | |
as shown below. | |
Bar counts (quantities of measures) for patterns are shown in bold. | |

All couples: | holding inside hands, dance forward 1-2-3-kick; gents start on left foot, |
ladies start on right foot); [this is a set dance step as might be danced | |
for the jig figure of the Caledonian Set]2; | |
partners change places (see heading) 1-2-3-kick (gents start on right foot, | |
ladies start on left foot -- the kicking feet)2; | |
partners change places again 1-2-3-kick (gents start on left foot, | |
ladies start on right foot)2; | |
take inside hands again and dance backward 1-2-3-kick2; | |
staying near one another, partners turn out from one another (gents anticlockwise, | |
ladies clockwise), dancing (not walking)2; | |
take crossed hands (rights on top) and dance in-place2; | |
take waltz hold and dance at home, making one revolution4; | |
repeat from as desired. |
