This tragic journey of the Cherokee nation has twice been encapsulated in sound for concert band or wind ensemble.  The first setting, “The Trail of Tears” was completed by Dr. James Barnes from the University of Kansas (pictured below at left).  Recently, Dr. Roland Barrett (pictured below at right) from the University of Oklahoma completed a setting of this epic historical event entitled “Month of the Cold Moon”.  Both composers through a variety of compositional techniques and orchestration have delivered powerful and emotional pieces that provide transport back to the winter of 1938-39 for the audience and performers.
