1. Warm-up

3 laps around gym

10 jumping jacks

10 GOOD push ups

The students will enter the gym and meet at the center circle.

They will perform the warm-up in their own personal space.

2. Introduction/Demonstration

I will begin by going over my expectations and rules of volleyball.

  • When whistle blows, everyone stops
  • No hanging on nets
  • Be on time
  • If handling equipment inappropriately or disrupting class, 1 warning then your team loses a point.

The students will pick a colored card from a container.  That color will designate the team color and court they will report to from now on.

The students will be at center court.

3. Game 1

  • 3v3

The students will play 3v3 volleyball with the group on the other side of the net.  To initiate play, they will use  a free ball instead of a serve (like a soccer throw-in )

  • use soccer throw-in toss
  • alternate serve after each rally

While the students are playing, I will be using the modified volleyball GPAI to pre-assess their volleyball skills and decision making.

Rally Scoring

Questions:  What did you do to receive the serve and keep the ball on your side of the court in order to set up for the attack?

Use a forearm pass to hit the ball high and to the middle.

The students will be at their home courts.

4. Practice Task

Forearm pass in a triad

  • 3 turns each
  • One player tosses the ball to a passer—the passer uses a forearm pass to pass the ball to the target player (setter).

Setter sets the ball

Forearm passer receives serve from other side

Vary the type of tosses—high, low, medium

High tosses

Bend knees

Feet to ball

Belly button to target

Thumbs together, flat platform

The students will be at their home courts.

5. Game 2

  • Alternate serving (free ball)
  • Earn 1 point for receiving serve with forearm pass
  • Earn extra point for receiving serve with forearm pass and hitting it high and to the middle of the court.

Regular scoring

Rally scoring

Bend Knees

Feet to ball

Thumbs together, flat platform

The students will be playing in their own court against the team on the other side of the net.

Closure - Method used for Checking for Understanding

What did you do to keep the ball on your side of the court?

Forearm pass and hit it high

Why do you want to keep the ball on your side of the court instead of hitting it immediately over?

To set up an attack

Assessment: What will you observe or do to assess student learning, in this lesson?

I will observe the students in game play based on their decision making, on-the-ball skills, and off-the-ball movements.  I will mark down the results on a modified GPAI.   I will be assessing student understanding through guided questions regarding tactics used in volleyball.
