Physical Education Unit Plan
Volleyball

Grade 7
Miss Kuban
Needs
Assessment:
The
students in Mr. Spellman’s classes have not played volleyball yet this year.
The last time they have played volleyball was in 6th grade, and
they were using beach balls to play because they were nervous to use real
balls. The students have little to no knowledge of volleyball or the rules
of volleyball. As a pre-assessment, I will utilize a skills checklist and an
exit slip to measure the students’ beginning tactical knowledge and skill
level. The students will be coming from a badminton unit, so they have had
some experience playing with other members on a team (doubles). The students
do have trouble keeping track of scores, and there is usually fighting and
bickering when it comes time to take the scores, so it will be important to
emphasize the scorekeepers’ responsibility. Also, in the badminton unit, I
am observing very little movement, so I believe the students have trouble
with off the ball movements. Therefore, tactical awareness will not transfer
over into volleyball, so even better emphasis on the tactics used in a
net/wall game will need to occur. In the badminton unit, it does not appear
that they have done a team contract, so a reminder of team expectations will
be important in the upcoming volleyball unit.
Management
Plan
Entry: When the students enter the gym,
they will meet in their home courts and begin fulfilling their team
responsibilities.
Exit: When instructed, the students
will leave the gym and take their belongings from the locker room. They will
line up in the hallway and wait for the bell.
Equipment
Routines: (distribution, during activity,
collection):
- Volleyball
poles
- Volleyball
Nets
- 25
soft volleyballs
- White
board
- Music
- Warm-up
notebooks/stretch cards
- Team
Contracts
Distribution: The volleyball nets will
already be set up once the students arrive. When the students arrive, the
equipment managers will distribute the volleyballs.
During
Activity: When I blow the whistle, the
students will stop playing and place the volleyball at their feet.
Collection: At the end of class, the
equipment managers will collect their team’s equipment and place it back in
the basket.
Restroom/Drink Procedures:
The
students may use the restroom that is right outside the door and get a drink
from the gym water fountain one at a time when given permission.
Classroom

safe manner towards others at all times

Transitions:
“When I say Go..” will be used to initiate movement
When the students hear “Freeze” during game play, they will stop
exactly where they are. When I blow the whistle, the students will stop
immediately and set their equipment down at their feet.
Emergency
Procedures:
Tornado
and fire drill posters are posted throughout the gym. In case of a fire, the
students will line up at the back door, exit into the parking lot, and face
the school.
Terminal
Unit Goal
By the
end of the unit, the students will demonstrate tactical awareness of setting
up an attack, winning a point, and defending space by using off the ball
movements (receiving serve, transitioning, opening up, supporting, base
position) and on the ball skills (forearm pass, overhead pass, and blocking,
etc.) in the game of volleyball.
The
students will demonstrate social responsibility by fulfilling their roles on
the team contract, cooperating with their team and others in the class, and
abide by all rules set down by the teacher.

Focus: Setting up to attack
Objective:
In a 3v3 setting, the students will set up to attack by utilizing the
forearm pass (bend low, flat arms).
Warm-up:
3 laps around gym, stretching
Introduction:
Introduce volleyball. Ask who has played volleyball before. Go over rules
of volleyball.
Have
the students pick a colored card out of a container. The color they choose
is the color of the team they are on and will designate which court they will
report to for future classes.
Game
1: The students will play 3v3 volleyball with the group on the other side
of the net. To initiate play, they will use a free ball instead of a
serve (like a soccer throw-in )
During
this time, I will be pre-assessing the students’ skills using a modified
GPAI.
Questions:
What did you do to receive the serve and keep the ball on your side of the
court in order to set up for the attack?
Practice:
Forearm pass in home court
Game
2: 3v3; earn 1 point for receiving serve with forearm pass. Receive 2
points for receiving with forearm pass and hitting it high and to the
middle of the court.

Assessment
Plan:
I will
pre-assess the students on their cognitive understanding as well as their
game performance using a modified GPAI. My assessments of the students’ game
performance will be done on an on-going basis. During the second game of
each lesson, I will be assessing one team using the modified GPAI. I will
assess one team per day. I will assess the students’ cognitive understanding
by using exit slips. The students will also be completing a project. Each
team will research a volleyball drill and write up a report about it. They
will show the class their findings and demonstrate it. There will also be a
quiz after the semi-final game that the students will also be able to
demonstrate their cognitive understanding of volleyball.
