6th Grade Coaches’ Corner

Lesson 1

Today we are going to play Team Handball.  During the game today, we will have to figure out how to get the ball to the end zone with our teammates without taking any steps when we have the ball.  When playing the game, try to find some similarities between Team Handball and Ultimate Frisbee.

Lesson 2

Last lesson, we focused on passing to move up the court towards the goal.  Today, we are going to learn different kinds of shots we take on goal—the shoulder shot, underhand shot, jump shot, wing shot, and fall shot.  Today, when we shoot, we want to remember to shoot low and hard.

Lesson 3/Lesson 4

It is hard to score goals if we cannot get close enough to shoot.  Why is it so hard to pass to teammates when they are standing so close to you and not spread out?  What should we do to get open?  How do we know if a teammate is open?  Today we are going to learn some ways to get away from defenders and create open space so that we can help our teammates.

Lesson 5

Today we are going to focus on playing good defense.  Remember that we have been playing warm defense—one arm’s length away from the other player.  During our game today, think about where you should stand so that the player you are guarding cannot receive a pass.  How do I guard to defend passes?  What should I do if my player has the ball?  Today, during the game, try to keep the other team from scoring more than 3 goals.

Lesson 6

We have been playing great defense by covering space and guarding our opponent, but what if the other player gets past us and shoots on goal?  The player who guards the goal is called the goalkeeper.  Today, during our game, everyone will have a chance to play as the goalkeeper.  While in the goal, think about how you should position yourself so that it is hard for the other team to score goals.

Lesson 7

Today is our final day of Team Handball, which means it’s our Team Handball Tournament day!  During your games, remember all the things we have learned—move to open space, make short, quick passes, move forward towards the goal, play warm defense, and position yourself between the opponent and the goal.  Also, if you are watching a game, remember to be respectful of your classmates.
