4.4 Management Routines

Back

This video highlights my start signal and equipment routines.  While I am checking for understanding, the students are all sitting “criss-cross applesauce” two scoots away from the equipment waiting for my instructions and start signal.  You will notice that the students are listening and not one student is playing with equipment. All the students wait for my start signal.  After I say “Go”, the students immediately rise up and begin jumping.  Then, I pin point those students who are getting started right away.

This video highlights my stop signal and equipment routine.  As soon as I say “Freeze”, the students move to where they can see me, set their equipment down, take two steps back, and sit down.  You will notice that I do not repeat my stop signal, and because the students transition quickly, I am able to begin my next instruction and demonstration without any delays.

Back

This video highlights the entry routine used in a 6th grade Team Handball lesson.  At the first lesson, the students had filled out team contracts and now know their roles on the team.  Upon entry into the gymnasium, every student is to fulfill their role.  In this video, the equipment managers had passed out the pinnies, the coaches had reported to the coaches’ corner, and the athletic trainers are getting their team started warming up and stretching.

Back

This video highlights my exit routine.  The lesson closure had just ended, and the students are waiting for further instructions to line up at the door.  I tell the students that when I say “Go”, they will place their jump ropes back outside the black out-of-bounds line neatly where they got them and quietly line up.  I thank the students who are waiting for me to say “Go”.  After I say “Go”, the students quickly put their jump ropes back where I told them and begin lining up.  I positive pinpoint the students who are behaving in line to achieve the desired behaviors from the rest of the class.
