This short presentation-tutorial is based on work of many great people who discovered and developed this field of soft matter. I am grateful to Professors Allender, Bos, Chien, Jakli, Lavrentovich, Palffy-Muhoray, Shiyanovskii, Yang in the Chemical Physics Interdisciplinary Program at the Liquid Crystal Institute who introduced me to the exciting area of liquid crystals.
