SMOKE DETECTORS

Present

Most smoke detectors contain a small quantity (<1microCi) of an artificially produced radioisotope, Americium-241.  The Americium-241 has a half-life of 432 years and is produced in nuclear reactors from the decay of Plutonium-241.  Americium was discovered in 1945 during the Manhattan Project.  It emits alpha particles and low energy gamma rays.
