Some welding rods for TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding contain up to 4% thorium.  The thoriated electrodes “provide a cleaner arc, last longer and tend to restrike with a more stable arc.”  Although thoriated welding rods are still common, the trend is to use other, non-radioactive, rare earth additives.
