PNI (psychoneuroimmunology) consists of the study of the interaction between the brain, behavior, and the immune system.

While the majority of research conducted in the area of PNI has been focused on the idea that behavior and psychological status can impact the functioning of the immune system, within the past several years it has become clear that there is a bidirectional relationship between these systems.

As a result, a large amount of research within the field of PNI is now made up of studies which examine the impact of immune system activation on behavior and psychological functioning.

One example of the impact of immune activation on behavior can be seen in sickness behavior.
