NCATE Standard 2.2

            The candidate uses ELA extensively and creatively to help

            students become more familiar with their own and others’ cultures.

      Artifact 1       African American Poetry.

               Students will be able to compare and contrast author’s use of direct and indirect characterization by participating in a literature discussion.  Students will also be able to distinguish parallel plot and subplot affects the action of this literary text.

                 NCATE Standard 2.4

                The candidate designs and implements instruction and assessment

                that assists students in developing habits of critical thinking. 

       Artifact 2         Discussion on Winter and Spring by William Shakespeare.

                   Critical thinking comparing both poems.

NCATE Standard 2.5

The candidate has made meaningful and creative connections between 

the ELA curriculum and developments in culture, society, and education.

         Artifact 3        The Tom Sawyer Graphic Novel Project designed for 7th grade English.

                       At the middle school where I completed my student teaching, the English department as a team designed a graphic novel project for the 7th graders who studied The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.  This way the students could interpret their assigned chapter with a drawing and their assigned literary element.  This project allowed the students to show their creativity and deeper understanding of how different yet similar life is today with the interaction of peoples of different races, cultures, and social status.

NCATE Standard 2.6

The candidate has planned and carried out extended learning experiences that

integrate arts and humanities into the daily learning of their students.
