Harmonizing a Bass Line
- Find places where cadences are possible and likely.
Look for:
- Perfect Authentic cadences at the end
- Authentic, deceptive and half cadences occurring within the piece.
- Use subdominant IV and II chords to prepare the V in cadences
- Use the second inversion chord only at cadences or as a passing, pedal or neighbor.
- Use the following chord progression maps:
- I – IV – VII – III – VI - II – V – I
- I – VI – IV – II
- I – III
- I – VII6 – I6 and I I - VII6 – I
- V – VI
- Avoid the following progressions:
- V to anything but VI and I
- VII to anything but I and III
- II – I
- II – IV
