An Introduction to MIDI

What is MIDI?

MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It is a standard for connecting electronic musical instruments together and was originally designed with 'synthesizer' keyboards and sequencers (drum machines) in mind.

The basic objective was to allow the capabilities of a synthesizer keyboard to be extended by adding sequencers, additional keyboards or dedicated sound-modules to a music system. Example of a MIDI system (2829 bytes)
