Dictionary

The dictionary is a volume of  English words listed in alphabetical order with definitions, speech rules, and examples of words in sentences. Some dictionaries include only the most popular words while others include every word in the English language. How do we know they haven't missed one? A mate to the dictionary is the thesaurus which gives similar words instead of definitions.

1. a book containing the words of a language, arranged in alphabetical order, with definitions, etymologies, pronunciations, and other information; a lexicon. 

2. a reference book listing alphabetically terms or names important to a particular subject or activity along with discussion of their meanings and applications

Thesaurus is a book of words or of information about a particular field or set of concepts; specifically , it is a dictionary of synonyms.
